EMBO Press transitions to fully open access -

Scientific publisher EMBO Press has announced that effective from January 1, 2024, all its journals, including The EMBO Journal and EMBO Reports, will switch from encouraging Open Access publication to applying Open Access to all published papers. The move aims to promote Open Science for individual researchers, institutions, and funders worldwide.

According to Fiona Watt, EMBO Director, the switch will advance the global discoverability, transparency, and availability of published research outcomes. Moreover, compliance with the Open Science policies of major research institutions such as the US National Institutes of Health, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and the European Research Council will allow EMBO Press journals to remove restrictions on access to publicly funded data and papers.

All research papers published in EMBO Press journals will include the source data underlying the figures, as well as data availability sections, to encourage data and preprint citation. The papers will also be available under a Creative Commons CC-BY license, which enables anyone to reuse, share, or build upon the publications with appropriate citation.

The move by EMBO Press to apply Open Access to all its journals is a significant development for Open Science, as it promotes transparency and accessibility of publicly funded research outcomes.
