Emerald celebrates 50 millionth full text article download -

Academic and professional publisher Emerald Group Publishing Ltd., UK, has announced that 50 million articles have been downloaded since the company first started collecting COUNTER-compliant statistics in 2002. Emerald was among the first publishers to gain COUNTER status, meeting the international code of practice for reports that allow clients to measure the usage of online information products and services in a consistent way.

Monash University in Australia made the 50 millionth download in September 2007. With campuses in South Africa, Australia and Malaysia, Monash is part of the Group of Eight leading research institutions in Australia, and rated one of the world's top MBA providers.

Entitled 'A comparison of work values and motives among Zimbabwean and British managers', the 50 millionth downloaded article was published in the Emerald journal, Personnel Review. It is authored by Joan Harvey (University of Newcastle, UK), Steve Carter (University of Derby, UK), and Godfrey Mudimu (University of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe).

Emerald's content delivery platform, Insight, is claimed to handle 150,000 article downloads in a single day without any impact on the quality of service for users. As part of its ongoing development programme, Emerald recently announced that, through a partnership with the British Library, it will be digitising its complete archive of journals including articles dating back to the 1800s. Called Emerald Backfiles, the product will be available in early 2008.
