Emre Celebi appointed Editor‑in‑Chief of Journal of Electronic Imaging -

SPIE has announced that M. Emre Celebi, Professor and Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Central Arkansas, will serve as the new Editor‑in‑Chief of the Journal of Electronic Imaging (JEI). His term begins on January 1, 2027.

Celebi earned his PhD in computer science and engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington. He brings extensive expertise in artificial intelligence and image processing, with research spanning color space transformations, compression, enhancement, quality assessment, segmentation, feature extraction, classification, clustering, and content‑based retrieval. An SPIE Fellow, he has previously served as an associate editor for JEI and the Journal of Medical Imaging, and has guest edited special issues for JEI.

Celebi noted that JEI has a distinguished history of more than three decades and expressed his intention to strengthen the journal’s integrity, quality, scientific impact, and efficiency.

Gwen Weerts, Director of Publishing Operations at SPIE, stated that Celebi’s background in artificial intelligence, image processing, and academic publishing positions him well to guide JEI during a period of rapid evolution in electronic imaging. She emphasized that his leadership would bring new ideas and vision to the journal.

Jonathan Phillips, Executive Director of the Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T), which co‑publishes JEI with SPIE, remarked that Celebi’s appointment combines technical expertise, editorial experience, and a strong connection to the imaging community. He added that the appointment strengthens collaboration between IS&T and SPIE and enhances engagement with the research community participating in IS&T’s Electronic Imaging Symposium in Silicon Valley.

JEI publishes peer‑reviewed papers on electronic imaging technologies, including AI algorithms, remote sensing, adaptive image processing, and quantum imaging. Established in 1992, the bi‑monthly journal has published more than 5,000 papers to date.
