EMS Press has announced that all 22 of its journals will be fully open access in 2025, marking the second consecutive year the publisher has achieved this milestone. This success follows another successful round of its Subscribe To Open (S2O) initiative, further cementing the publisher’s commitment to open access and equitable academic publishing.
For the second year in a row, EMS Press is delivering on its promise to publish all its journals without article processing charges, using both the S2O and Diamond open access models. This initiative aims to make high-quality research freely available while maintaining financial sustainability.
A key element of EMS Press’s success is its innovative "solidarity model," which ensures a fair distribution of shared package revenues. This model helps support journals with lower income, enabling them to meet sustainability goals while maintaining high publishing standards.
EMS Press's approach to open access represents a shift away from traditional subscription-based publishing, demonstrating that alternatives can be both sustainable and fair. The S2O model aligns with open science values, prioritizing quality publishing over commercial interests.
Looking ahead, EMS Press is already planning for the 2026 S2O round and invites libraries, consortia, funders, and other organizations to get in touch and learn more about supporting this groundbreaking initiative.
