EMS Press launches open access model 'Launch to Open' for community‑led publishing -

EMS Press has introduced Launch to Open (L2O), a community-based model designed to support the transition of established journals to open access through transparent cost structures and shared institutional responsibility.

The model distributes financial responsibility across subscribing institutions while disclosing full publication costs, funding targets, and the allocation of subscription revenue for each participating title. This approach provides libraries with visibility into the cost of maintaining high-quality, community-led scholarly publishing without reliance on profit-driven pricing structures.

L2O will debut with two well-established journal titles—Foundations of Computational Mathematics (FoCM) and Archiv der Mathematik (AdM)—which EMS Press will begin publishing from January 1, 2027. Subscriptions are currently open, with all contributions received before the January 31, 2027 deadline counting toward the funding target.

The model addresses challenges faced by journals transitioning away from large commercial publishers, particularly the absence of independent subscriber bases. By outlining operational costs and distributing responsibility among participating institutions, the initiative aims to support sustainable, community-led publishing models.

Subscription options include early adopter pricing, multi-year agreements, and package offers, all providing discounted rates. Subscriptions ensure archive access, perpetual access to subscribed volumes, and availability of online first articles regardless of whether the funding target is met.

EMS Press has also provided detailed information on how funding targets are calculated and how subscription contributions are allocated, supporting transparency in the transition process.
