Enabling Data Access and Sharing for Locally-Led Development: CABI's Insights at Global Digital Development Forum -

CABI’s expertise in data policy and practice was shared at the 2023 Global Digital Development Forum, which brought together over 3,000 professionals from more than 1,000 organizations around the world. Arun Jadhav, Manager – Digital Development, based at CABI’s centre in India, delivered a presentation titled ‘Enabling data access, sharing and reuse’, highlighting the challenges in research and development investments and policies.

Jadhav emphasized the importance of effective data collection, storing, and sharing based on the FAIR principles: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. He warned that the design of investments is often not robust enough to take data into account, and future investments that depend on that data are likely to fail and be diverted in focus and effort.

Jadhav also shared two in-country case studies from India and Ethiopia, highlighting how insufficient consultation hinders digital policy and research funding to improve livelihoods. He further explained how a Data Sharing Toolkit could unlock greater food security in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia through better access to information on soil health and agronomy domain.

The 2023 Global Digital Development Forum, organized by USAID, Chemonics, IBM, TechChange, Deloitte, DAI, Google, RTI International, Save the Children, Interledger Foundation, Bixal, and Palladium, focused on locally-led development, climate change and emerging technologies. It featured a range of keynote speakers from the digital development ecosystem, exploring a range of issues, including the role of global tech companies in locally-led development, innovative climate tech solutions, and the risks and benefits of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI).
