New York University’s Division of Libraries has announced the appointment of Eric I. Schwartz as the new Director of NYU Press, beginning his tenure on October 7, 2024. Schwartz brings a wealth of experience from his three-decade-long career in publishing, including leadership roles at prestigious academic presses in both the United States and the United Kingdom.
Schwartz has served as Editorial Director at Columbia University Press since 2014, where he was instrumental in launching numerous academic series in collaboration with various departments, including Anthropology, East Asian Languages and Cultures, and the university’s Oral History Program. Most recently, he played a pivotal role in the development of the interdisciplinary series Black Lives in the Diaspora: Past, Present, Future, working with Columbia’s Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies and Howard University’s College of Arts and Sciences.
Prior to his time at Columbia, Schwartz held key editorial positions at Princeton University Press, where he initiated a cognitive science list, and at Cambridge University Press, where he contributed to editorial and production efforts. His career began in the production departments of Springer-Verlag and Oxford University Press.
Schwartz will succeed Ellen Chodosh, who has served as Director of NYU Press since 2014. As he steps into his new role, Schwartz is expected to bring his extensive experience and visionary leadership to NYU Press, furthering its mission to advance scholarship and thought leadership across a wide range of disciplines.
