ESMO appoints new Editors-in-Chief for flagship journals -

The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) has announced new editorial appointments across its journals, effective January 2026. The leadership changes reflect ESMO’s commitment to advancing oncology research and clinical scholarship.

Dr. Hope S. Rugo has been named Editor-in-Chief of ESMO Open, succeeding Professor Giuseppe Curigliano. She leads the Division of Breast Medical Oncology and the Women’s Cancers Program at City of Hope, California. An internationally recognized expert in breast cancer research and clinical trials, Dr. Rugo is the first female Editor-in-Chief of a standalone ESMO journal. Her appointment is expected to strengthen the journal’s focus on translational science and patient care.

For ESMO Immuno-Oncology and Technology (IOTECH), Professors John Haanen and Sherene Loi will serve as Co-Editors-in-Chief for 2026–2027. Professor Haanen of the Netherlands Cancer Institute is recognized for his contributions to cancer immunotherapy and cellular therapy.
