The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) has introduced a Clinical Trials Funding initiative designed to support independent academic research focused on optimizing cancer care pathways, reducing treatment burden, and improving patient outcomes globally.
Aligned with the ESMO Roadmap 2030, the program will provide €1 million in funding to support up to two international clinical trials. Eligible projects must cover at least three world regions and be academically sponsored, with the potential to generate practice‑changing evidence in oncology.
The initiative is intended to address clinical questions that may not attract commercial funding but hold significant potential to improve cancer care delivery. Areas of interest include treatment optimization, streamlined delivery models, patient‑centered approaches, and healthcare sustainability.
Applications are invited from academic institutions, cancer centers, hospitals, and cooperative groups developing interventional clinical trials. Proposals should demonstrate patient involvement in study design and dissemination, alongside strong governance and quality assurance measures.
ESMO stated that the program reflects its commitment to supporting academic research capable of producing meaningful benefits for patients while contributing to more effective and sustainable cancer care.
