European alliance seek to preserve digital science records -

The Second International Conference on Permanent Access to the Records of Science, recently held in Brussels, saw the launch of the Alliance for Permanent Access, a group of stakeholders dedicated to preserving digital science records.

The Alliance brings together key international and national scientific organisations such as CERN, ESA, European Science Foundation (ESF), Max Planck Society and libraries. These have collaborated to help create a European digital information infrastructure. In the Conference, 60 experts and representatives of partners in the Alliance for Permanent Access to the Records of Science discussed how the preservation of digital science publications and data can be embedded into scientific practice across Europe.

Together with the EU, the Alliance seeks to spread good practices as well as promote research and development in preservation and management tools. With the aim of forming a European Digital Information Infrastructure, it has identified scientific communities as the key structural approach to meet the challenges ahead.

The next steps include the creation of a forum on preservation and access and developing a handbook of good practices. The Alliance is also hoping to secure funding to develop tools from available European Union programmes.
