European Society of Endocrinology set to launch two new open-access journals -

The European Society of Endocrinology (ESE) has announced the forthcoming launch of two new multidisciplinary open-access journals: Environmental Endocrinology and Obesity and Endocrinology. Both journals will be published by Oxford University Press, with their inaugural issues scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2025. Submissions are now open through the journals’ respective websites.

Environmental Endocrinology aims to publish high-quality research exploring the impact of environmental factors on hormone systems in humans and other living organisms, embracing a One Health perspective. The journal will welcome contributions from a variety of fields, including epidemiology, climate research, toxicological sciences, endocrinology, and developmental biology.

On the other hand, Obesity and Endocrinology focuses on advancing the understanding of obesity, encompassing basic, translational, and clinical aspects of endocrinology. This journal will address the complexity of obesity as an endocrine disease, covering its biology, diagnostics, treatment, and its connections to other endocrine and metabolic disorders. Additionally, it will examine the interactions between the microbiome and the exposome, as well as the sociological, political, and global implications of obesity.

The Editor-in-Chief for Environmental Endocrinology is Josef Köhrle, a Senior Professor of Molecular Endocrinology at the Institute of Experimental Endocrinology, Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Germany. He has extensive experience with leading endocrinology publications, and currently co-leads ESE’s Endocrine-disrupting Chemicals Working Group. He also serves as co-chair of ESE’s Focus Area in Environmental Endocrinology.

Melania Manco, a clinical research scientist and consultant endocrinologist at Bambino Gesù Hospital in Rome, Italy, will serve as the Editor-in-Chief for Obesity and Endocrinology. She has a Ph.D. in nutrition and metabolism and was awarded National Habilitation as a Full Professor of Endocrinology in 2020. Manco is also co-chair of the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) Collaborating Centres for Obesity Management Working Group.

These new journals will join the ESE family of publications, which includes the flagship European Journal of Endocrinology, also published by Oxford University Press. In January 2025, the new journals will adopt a modern visual identity that will be applied to the flagship journal as well.
