Ex Libris, a Clarivate company, has introduced the Primo Next Discovery Experience User Interface, a redesigned academic library discovery system developed in close partnership with the library community. The new interface was informed by feedback from a dedicated UX focus group, 12 design partners, and over 100 early-access users.
Primo Next offers a streamlined, intuitive user experience tailored to the discovery needs of students, faculty, and library staff. As a central component of the broader Next Discovery Experience initiative, the updated interface aims to enhance research efficiency and improve the visibility of library collections.
Several improvements have been made in response to direct user input. These include simplified navigation workflows that reduce the steps needed to access resources such as book reviews; a consolidated dashboard offering a one-page view of user activity including loans, requests, and search history; and an enhanced search menu that simplifies field and filter selection.
The updated interface also features improvements to collection discovery, including new facets, list views, and pagination. Institutions can customize their discovery homepage more easily and create new components aligned with institutional branding. Additionally, the interface integrates the Primo Research Assistant, which supports academic research through AI-powered search capabilities.
Additional features, such as natural language search, citation trail, and resource recommendations and ProQuest Document Insights, are expected to launch later in 2025. According to Clarivate executives, these enhancements reflect the company’s commitment to ongoing community engagement and to delivering tools that support evolving academic workflows.
