Finland to host 2010 ICSTI Annual Conference -

The International Council for Scientific and Technical Information (ICSTI) Annual Conference 2010 will take place in Helsinki, Finland, on June 10 and 11, 2010. The conference is expected to bring together the top names and decision-makers from the information sector. The conference's Finnish organisers are Tietoasiantuntijat ry (The Finnish Information Specialists), VTT Technical Research Center of Finland and The National Board of Patents and Registration Finland NBPR.

The main topic of the two-day event will be 'From Information to Innovation'. A discussion on the topic will be initiated by Finnish and international decision-makers in the sector. Finnish expertise is represented for example, by Sitra's ombudsman Mikko Kosonen, who will discuss the significance of information usage and strategic agility in today's fast-changing world. VTT's President and CEO Erkki KM Leppavuori on the other hand will contemplate the role of information from the viewpoint of multi-technological research center and its customers. Also Senior Vice President, Global Technology at KONE Corporation Jussi Oijala will take the stand and concentrate on the challenges and opportunities brought along by opening up of the innovation process towards partners and suppliers as well as towards customers and end-users.

Among the top names from the international sector are Seed Media Group's CEO and founder Adam Bly, who will give a talk about the open science coming real, and Tony Hey, corporate vice president of the External Research Division of Microsoft Research. He will speak about the emergence of a new, 'fourth paradigm' for scientific research involving the acquisition, management and analysis of vast quantities of scientific data. The one-and-a-half day conference programme will also feature Jay Katzen from Elsevier Science & Technology division, R. Sivadas from Scope e-Knowledge Center and Hee-Yoon Choi from Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information.

As a part of the conference, an exhibition will be held, in which Finnish and international companies and organisations from the information sector will present their products and services.

Overcoming linguistic barriers is seen to be a major challenge for the digital society. The conference is launching a new multilingual WorldWideScience portal which will allow researchers to find real-time information in their preferred language. The new portal combines cutting-edge technology from Microsoft Research and Deep Web Technologies, and is expected to be a valuable source of information to the scientific community worldwide. VTT Technical Research Center of Finland has participated in the project since the beginning.
