The European Commission has initiated a public consultation on revising EU copyright legislation, with particular attention to adapting the legal framework to technological developments—especially artificial intelligence—and to the requirements of research and innovation.
Experts in copyright law from FIZ Karlsruhe contributed to the first round of consultations by submitting a statement. In their submission, they emphasized the importance of ensuring legally compliant use of artificial intelligence as a research tool and highlighted the need to strengthen the right to secondary publication in support of open science. They also brought forward the perspectives of the scientific community, outlined specific challenges, and proposed ways to contextualize the debate beyond the boundaries of copyright law.
The European Commission is continuing its review of copyright legislation through additional consultation rounds. Colleagues from FIZ Karlsruhe’s Intellectual Property Law unit will remain actively engaged, contributing expertise and fostering dialogue throughout the process.
