FIZ Karlsruhe, a member of the Leibniz Association, has received a positive assessment in its latest scientific evaluation. The Senate of the Leibniz Association has endorsed the findings of the evaluation committee and adopted the accompanying statement, marking the near completion of the formal review process. A final decision from the Joint Science Conference (GWK) is pending.
Following this evaluation, the Senate has recommended the continuation of joint funding for FIZ Karlsruhe by the federal and state governments. As per the standard protocol for all Leibniz institutions, the next funding review is scheduled in seven years.
The evaluation rated key areas of the institute as “excellent” and “very good,” with particular commendation for the quality of its information services, the scope and rigor of its research, and the strength of its national and international partnerships.
Specific services received noteworthy recognition. The international patent information service STN and the open access mathematics platform zbMATH Open were both highlighted for their forward-looking content and technological advancements.
FIZ Karlsruhe was also recognized for its active involvement in the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) and its participation in a range of projects contributing to the digital transformation of science and culture. Its expanding portfolio in the humanities and cultural sciences, particularly in the preservation and presentation of cultural heritage, was viewed positively.
Research contributions in areas such as automated indexing of historical datasets and legal aspects of data protection were acknowledged for their relevance to the further development of the institute’s offerings.
The evaluation also noted FIZ Karlsruhe’s high level of self-financing, stable staffing structure, and demonstrated commitment to vocational training and equal opportunity initiatives.
The institute has interpreted the Senate’s recommendations as a validation of its current strategic direction and a mandate to continue its present course.
