Florida State Open Publishing opens 2025 call for open-access publication proposals -

Florida State Open Publishing has opened its annual call for proposals, inviting members of the Florida State University community to submit concepts for open-access monographs, textbooks, journals, and specialized projects.

The program, based within the Office of Digital Research and Scholarship at Florida State University Libraries, supports digital and print-on-demand publications developed by FSU scholars. Its services mirror those offered by traditional publishers while prioritizing open access to expand the reach of academic work. The initiative also supports innovative or experimental scholarship and adapts assistance to meet the specific needs of authors.

Insights shared through the program emphasize its role in enabling scholars to disseminate research, instructional materials, and niche journals without access barriers, with the aim of increasing visibility and extending the impact of FSU-driven scholarship. Contributors are encouraged to use this opportunity to reach broader audiences and explore new approaches to academic dissemination.

FSOP focuses on publications created by FSU faculty, students, and staff, with particular interest in work that advances understanding of local and regional culture or reinforces partnerships within the university and the Tallahassee community. The program highlights open access as a core component of its mission, noting that openly available scholarship can attract more citations, strengthen collaborative opportunities, and support specialized academic fields that may face challenges with traditional publishing outlets.

Because FSOP operates within a library environment, it can support projects with limited or highly specialized audiences and model practices that emphasize accessible, timely, and high-quality scholarship. Each year, only a small number of projects are selected by the program’s advisory board. Once accepted, staff work closely with authors throughout editing, design, and production to ensure that each publication aligns with the creator’s goals and scholarly vision.

bAdditional insights underscore the value of open-access publishing for sharing expanded content, including applied research components that may not fit within the constraints of conventional academic journals.

The fall 2025 call for proposals is now open, with submissions due Dec. 1, 2025. Proposal guidelines and submission information are available at publishing.lib.fsu.edu.
