The nearly annual symposium hosted by the Frankfurt University Library Johann Christian Senckenberg will be organised in cooperation with the Frankfurt Book Fair. On the Friday of the Fair, a set of studies on the presumed consequences and general acceptance of Open Access will be presented.
The launching point will be the latest results of the DFG-funded study 'Economic Implications of New Models for Information Supply for Science and Research in Germany', which was conducted by Berndt Dugall, Director of the University Library Johann Christian Senckenberg, Frankfurt a.m., with Prof. Dr. Wolfgang König, Managing director of the House of Finance, Frankfurt am Main, and Prof. John Houghton, of University of Victoria, Australia. The study deals with the development of alternative models for publishing and distributing academic content, as the costs of doing so have increased tremendously and information has generally become more accessible on the Internet.
In Germany, there has been an attempt to improve the model of information delivery via a national licensing programme with the financial support of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Association). As a result, core information can be made widely available electronically without disadvantaging the academic or incurring high costs.
Following the lecture programme, there will be a podium discussion highlighting the various positions toward Open Access strategies. The fee for participating in the seminar will be 50 euros. This also includes a five-day ticket for the Frankfurt Book Fair 2011, lunch and drinks during the symposium.
The Frankfurt Book Fair claims to be the biggest book and media fair in the world - with around 7,500 exhibitors from over 110 countries. It also organises the participation of German publishers at around 20 international book fairs. It maintains the most visited website worldwide for the publishing industry at www.book-fair.com and its directory of decision-makers in the book and media industries features around 31,000 contacts.
