Fresenius University modernizes library services with Alma and Primo -

Fresenius University of Applied Sciences has completed a significant upgrade of its library systems by implementing Alma and Primo, cloud-based platforms from Ex Libris. The migration supports the university’s efforts to modernize library infrastructure and enhance digital services for students and faculty.

Before the transition, the university operated on a legacy system that lacked essential functionality, particularly in managing electronic resources and generating reports. The university adopted Alma and Primo to address these limitations in response to increased demand for digital access and operational efficiency.

The new systems enable centralized management of electronic content and offer improved resource discoverability. This aligns with the university’s “e-first” strategy, adopted in response to changing educational needs during the pandemic. Additional benefits include streamlined workflows and enhanced support for users across the university’s eight geographically dispersed locations in Germany.

The migration also addressed the complexity of supporting a distributed library network with limited on-site staff. Alma and Primo’s software-as-a-service model provided the flexibility needed to ensure consistent service quality and staff support at all locations.

The university’s long-standing relationship with Ex Libris contributed to the decision, as library staff had previously attended product webinars to evaluate platform capabilities. Since the migration, staff have reported improved cataloguing efficiency, reporting, and access to centralized resources.

The integration marks a significant step in Fresenius University’s digital transformation and reflects its commitment to delivering modern, user-centered library services in a dynamic academic environment.
