Frontiers and the University of Padua establish flat fee open access publishing agreement for 2025 -

Frontiers has entered into a one-year open access publishing agreement with the University of Padua, supported by its Open Science Committee. The agreement, with the option for renewal, enables affiliated researchers to publish in any of Frontiers’ journals without individual article processing charges (APCs).

Under the flat fee model, the University of Padua gains unlimited open access publishing opportunities for its researchers, providing predictable and transparent costs through a fixed annual fee. The agreement aims to streamline budget planning and reduce administrative workloads for both library and research staff. Research published under the agreement will be immediately accessible globally under a CC-BY license, with authors retaining copyright.

Monica Salvadori, Vice Rector of Historical and Cultural Heritage and coordinator of the University’s Open Science Committee, noted that the agreement represents a step toward sustainable and centralized open access models, extending beyond the APC-based approach. She highlighted the involvement of the OS Commission, the OS Committee, and the University Library Centre in developing the agreement with Frontiers.

Martina Sollai, Institutional Partnerships Specialist at Frontiers, emphasized the shared commitment to open science, stating that the agreement aims to remove barriers and foster a fairer research environment. She acknowledged the collaboration with the University Library Centre (Centro di Ateneo per le Biblioteche – CAB) in finalizing the partnership.

Researchers are eligible under the agreement if the corresponding author is affiliated with the University of Padua and uses an institutional email address during manuscript submission.

The agreement reflects a broader effort to advance open science by reducing financial and administrative barriers, increasing the global visibility of the University of Padua’s research, and contributing to a more transparent scholarly publishing landscape.
