Google allows users to edit US map under Map Maker initiative -

Internet search services provider Google, Inc., US, is reportedly set to let users edit and make additions to the map of the US under its Map Maker initiative launched three years ago. Google Map Maker is said to be a parallel version of Google Maps that allows users to contribute and edit maps. Once approved by moderators, the edits are published on Google Maps, which can be accessed globally.

Map Maker has been deployed across 183 countries and regions worldwide. Users have been adding details to their regions, such as roads, universities and bike paths. It was estimated that in 2008, about 15 percent of the global population had digital maps of their areas via Google Maps. The percentage is estimated to have risen to 30 percent now due to user contributions via Map Maker.

Google is now making available the entire US map for editing. There are two primary reasons for the three-year wait. The company first made map editing available in regions of the world that required detailed maps. It also wanted to ensure that its moderation and editing procedures could be enhanced in case of higher demand.

Google users can login, zoom in to a region and add a map point. On being saved, the edit is reviewed by a moderator. Once it is approved, the edit is posted to the live version of Google Maps.

A hybrid moderation system has been implemented to ensure the accuracy and quality of map edits. Apart from an in-house team, the moderation is managed by Map Maker users who have graduated to join the moderating community.
