HARRASSOWITZ, a global full-service subscription agent and bookseller, has awarded the 2014 Charleston Conference Scholarship to Charlotte Roh, Scholarly Communication Resident Librarian at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Ms. Roh was awarded the $1,000 scholarship to attend the conference, which takes place November 5 - 8 in Charleston, South Carolina.
In support of the 2014 conference theme of “The Importance of Being Earnest”, applicants for this year’s scholarship were asked to submit a short essay on the topic “What does ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ mean to libraries and vendors?”
In her winning essay, Ms. Roh observes that as textbook costs soar at three times the rate of inflation, students struggle financially and in the classroom, doing without the materials they need to learn. In short: Students are not buying books because they are too expensive. One solution to this barrier to student learning,” she notes, “is the use of library resources.
Judging the submissions were: Clint Chamberlain, Educational Resource Support Officer, Dallas County Community College District; Lynda Fuller Clendenning, Head of the Acquisitions Division at Indiana University in Bloomington; and Tina Feick, HARRASSOWITZ’s Director of Sales and Marketing for North America.
