HighWire Press and GeoScienceWorld expands journals partnership -

HighWire Press, a not-for-profit division of Stanford University Libraries, and GeoScienceWorld (GSW) have announced a significant expansion of their journals partnership through a new integrated eBooks platform built on the HighWire Open Platform.

The GSW eBooks Collections claims to be the first non-profit, multi-publisher eBooks platform devoted to the study of the earth sciences. It will include more than 1,000 scholarly titles at launch with library-preferred purchasing and access models and the latest technologies from HighWire, including mobile access, faceted and map-based searching, metadata-driven content recommendations, and social sharing tools. Library trials will be available in January with public product release in May 2014.

With the addition of eBooks to its 45 geoscience journals and AGI's GeoRef, GSW will provide much of the most respected earth science content with sophisticated integration, search, and discovery capabilities. The organisation's mission is to expand global access to scholarly resources using the most useful and effective research tools. As a non-profit, GSW strives to deliver value without commercial markups. GSW's journals archive, for example, is provided to current subscribers free of charge.

The move comes on top of a related project slated for October 2013, the beta release of OpenGeoSci, a cyber-infrastructure and map-based discovery platform, which will provide free, geographic searching for more than 300,000 maps, cross-sections, charts, tables, and other data assets from an ever-expanding collection of public and proprietary journals, eBooks, and other vetted research resources.
