ICSTI Annual Conference 2010 - From Information to Innovation -

International Council for Scientific and Technical Information (ICSTI) Annual Conference 2010 will take place in Helsinki, Finland, on June 10 and 11, 2010. The conference is expected to bring together a large group of the sector's top names and decision-makers. It will highlight the significance of information as the enabler and catalyst for scientific, technical and business developments and point to elements of success in building the future. The conference's Finnish organisers are Tietoasiantuntijat ry (The Finnish Information Specialists), VTT Technical Research Center of Finland and The National Board of Patents and Registration Finland NBPR.

The main topic of the two-day event will be 'From Information to Innovation'. A discussion on the topic will be initiated by Finnish and international decision-makers in the sector. Finnish expertise is represented e.g. by Sitra's ombudsman Mikko Kosonen, who will discuss the significance of information usage and strategic agility in today's fast-changing world. VTT's President and CEO Erkki KM Leppavuori on the other hand will contemplate the role of information from the viewpoint of multi-technological research center and its customers. Also Senior Vice President, Global Technology at KONE Corporation Jussi Oijala will take the stand and concentrate on the challenges and opportunities brought along by opening up of the innovation process towards partners and suppliers as well as towards customers and end-users.

Among the top names from the international sector are Seed Media Group's CEO and founder Adam Bly, who will give a talk about the open science coming real, and Elsevier's Jay Katzen, who is the Managing director of academic and government products for the Science and technology division. He will speak about the accelerating scientific discovery through openness and collaboration.

Understanding how scientific researchers work, enables information providers to provide intelligent, relevant products and services. Embedding these solutions in a researcher's workflow is central to a number of projects being undertaken by the Science, Technology and Medicine team at the British Library. Lee-Ann Coleman will provide an overview of projects that her team is delivering to achieve this aim. She will describe a virtual research environment for scientists, being developed in collaboration with Microsoft External Research and how this tool can help researchers to discover, organise, manage and share information throughout the lifecycle of a research project.
