Improving global research discoverability and visibility through ScienceDirect -

ScienceDirect, the Elsevier platform renowned for its vast collection of scientific, technical, and medical research, has released its report titled 'Expanded reach on a trusted platform.' This report delves into the initial outcomes of ScienceDirect's pilot initiative, aimed at facilitating researchers in finding and accessing articles from multiple publishing partners alongside Elsevier journals.

Since January 2022, leading publishers including the American Chemical Society (ACS), the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), Taylor & Francis, and Wiley have made select research articles from their Organic Chemistry and Transportation domains discoverable on ScienceDirect. The International Union of Crystallography's IUCr Journals joined the initiative in August 2022.

The report presents valuable insights into the discoverability and consumption of research included in the pilot, along with feedback from authors, readers, and librarians.

The pilot program will continue to evolve beyond Organic Chemistry and Transportation to encompass additional research topics. The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and Brill are set to join the pilot, with content from 36 journals to be included on ScienceDirect in Spring/Summer 2023.

Throughout the pilot phase, researchers have gained access to over 100,000 articles from 38 industry-leading journals, courtesy of the participating publishers. They have been able to discover these articles through search, recommendations, and browsing. For Open Access articles, the full text is instantly available in HTML format. For entitled access to subscription content, researchers are directed to the PDF hosted on the publisher's website, indicated by a PDF button on ScienceDirect. The determination of entitled access is facilitated through GetFTR, a real-time entitlement verification solution.
