Informative sessions on Japan, half year on from the disaster, and self publishing presented at Frankfurt Book Fair -

The Frankfurt Book Fair and the Japanese Consul General hosted a very informative session entitled 'Japan – half year on from the disaster.' In March 2011 the dreadful events in Japan shocked the entire world. Earthquake, tsunami and Fukashima, as well as the tragedies that arose from them, were the defining news topics. Toyoei Shigeeda, the Japanese General Counsel in Frankfurt provided his first hand account of the events and also described the situation today, six months after the disasters.

Self-publishing was a fairly active theme during most of the 2011 Frankfurt Book Fair. epubli GmbH presented a session entitled 'Self-publishing: Your own book-quick and easy.' The presentation demonstrated how to produce a book or ebook from a PDF file. The functionalities of self-publishing and print-on-demand were explained. Similarly, Chichili Publishing described its self-publishing ebook programme for authors. Since the programme entered the German book market in December 2010, the ebooks published using the programme have enjoyed significant success on ebook bestseller lists.

CERN and Edition Lammerhuber offered a special event showing an actual Large Hadron Collider (LHC) control room that was transported from Geneva to Frankfurt. Visitors could watch leading researchers at work via a live stream and see particle physics in real time direct from CERN. Visitors and the media were also able to hear about the latest research in particle physics and get answers to questions from the top researchers in the field.

With many exhibitors and visitors, not only from the book industry, but also other related industries such as film, games, and information and communications technology, the Frankfurt Book Fair demonstrated that the sphere of interaction for members of the publishing industry has become significantly larger. Many new areas of specialisation – from digital publishing services and computer games production, to legal and financial consultants for crossmedial products – could be found at the Book Fair, spread between the different halls, professional areas and regional sections. In all, around 7,384 exhibitors from 106 countries were present, and the more than 3,200 events attracted approximately 280,194 visitors.
