The Institute of Physics (IOP) and IOP Publishing (IOPP) are set to celebrate the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ) with a dynamic calendar of events and initiatives throughout 2025. The year-long celebration honors 100 years of quantum science and its transformative potential across various sectors.
The International Year of Quantum (IYQ), recognized by the United Nations, aims to raise awareness about the rapid advancements in quantum technologies. These cutting-edge innovations harness the unique properties of subatomic particles to process information in unprecedented ways, making quantum science as revolutionary as the advent of AI, the internet, or the combustion engine.
Quantum technologies are poised to revolutionize industries and daily life by enabling breakthroughs previously considered impossible. For instance, quantum computing could dramatically optimize energy grids to combat climate change, while quantum brain scanners hold the promise of saving lives by offering a portable, helmet-sized solution for detailed medical imaging.
The IOP plays a pivotal role in this global initiative, representing the UK and Ireland on the IYQ international steering group. As the UK's designated coordinator for quantum community efforts on behalf of the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology, the IOP is supporting a series of events that will span the UK and Ireland throughout 2025, leading up to the formal launch at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris this February.
The celebrations will include a wide range of events designed to highlight quantum advancements, educate the public, and showcase the work being done by researchers and businesses in the UK and Ireland. These efforts will emphasize the impact of quantum science on tackling global challenges, such as climate change and healthcare, while offering exciting new perspectives on how quantum will shape our future.
