Publisher BMJ Group, UK, has announced that the 2010 International Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare, held in Nice, had been declared a success by organisers and delegates. This was despite the shutdown of a large part of European airspace due to volcanic ash. The forum is jointly organised by the BMJ Group in the UK and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement in the US.
About 700 delegates from 60 countries participated in person and a further 2,000 tuned into the three live video streams. The Forum’s website received nearly 3,000 visitors from 42 different countries during the event. Don Berwick, President and CEO at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), spoke live from Boston in his first speech since receiving the presidential nominee for the Administrator of CMS. Berwick congratulated attendees and commented that the rapid redesign and execution of the conference under difficult circumstances was an example of the power of creativity, innovation and teamwork to be found in healthcare professionals worldwide.
The Forum seeks to support the movement for healthcare improvement. It aims to improve outcomes for patients and communities; provide practical ideas that can be implemented in the workplace; promote research into quality and safety improvement; foster effective innovation; and connect healthcare leaders and practitioners worldwide.
The three-day meeting reportedly brought together an international group of people who shared a concern and a passion for improving quality and safety in healthcare. Attendees took part in sessions that ranged from the basic disciplines of quality improvement to the latest thinking in how to improve quality and safety.
