IOP Publishing achieves 36% carbon emissions reduction, advancing sustainable practices in scientific publishing -

IOP Publishing has reported a 36% reduction in carbon emissions compared with a 2020 baseline, marking a significant milestone in the organization’s sustainability strategy. The reduction reflects efforts to embed sustainability across operations while supporting a more sustainable and equitable future for the global scientific community.

Key contributors to the emissions reduction include the relocation to a new energy-efficient head office in Bristol, designed to deliver long-term environmental benefits. A continued digital-first publishing strategy has also generated emissions savings across the content lifecycle, alongside progress within the supply chain through closer engagement with suppliers.

The publisher has identified Scope 3 emissions as the next major focus area, accounting for approximately 90% of the overall carbon footprint. The most significant sources include purchased goods and services, business travel, and employee commuting, which represent the largest opportunities for further emissions reductions.

Since 2020, IOP Publishing has worked to map environmental impact, identify areas for change, and track progress transparently. This work has been supported by ClimatePartner, which provides measurement and emissions reduction expertise, and informed by DIMPACT, an industry initiative focused on mapping and reducing the carbon footprint of digital content delivery within media and publishing.

The reported reduction places IOP Publishing ahead of common industry targets, which often aim for a 30–50% carbon reduction by 2030 against a 2020 baseline. The organization has indicated that sustainability considerations will continue to be embedded into business decisions as efforts progress toward further reductions across operations and the wider value chain.
