IOP Publishing expands its open access environmental portfolio with Environmental Research: Water -

IOP Publishing (IOPP) is pleased to announce the launch of Environmental Research: Water, a new open access (OA) journal that provides an interdisciplinary forum for researchers working towards achieving global water sustainability. This journal is the ninth addition to IOPP’s expanding Environmental Research series, which builds upon the success of its renowned journal, Environmental Research Letters.

Environmental Research: Water will cover all aspects of the hydrosphere, exploring the interconnections between the physical, chemical, biological, and ecological processes that govern water sustainability, as well as the evolving relationship between humanity and water.

The launch of this journal is particularly timely, as water research has more than doubled over the past decade in response to growing concerns about water scarcity. UNICEF predicts that over 700 million people could be displaced by 2030 due to this crisis.

IOP Publishing has appointed two distinguished scientists to lead the journal as joint Editors-in-Chief. Michelle van Vliet, Professor of Water Quality and Sustainable Water Systems at Utrecht University, and Martina Flörke, Professor of Engineering Hydrology and Water Management at Ruhr-University Bochum, will bring their extensive expertise and knowledge to this role. They will collaborate closely with an in-house editorial team to ensure editorial excellence and adherence to IOPP’s rigorous peer review standards.

Authors publishing in Environmental Research: Water will benefit from free open access publishing throughout 2025, with all article publication charges covered by IOPP.

By publishing in Environmental Research: Water, authors not only contribute to the advancement of physics in its broadest sense but also invest in the community of which they are a part. All funds generated by IOP Publishing are directed to the Institute of Physics, helping to make physics accessible to individuals from diverse backgrounds.

IOP Publishing has partnered with the American Physical Society and AIP Publishing to establish Purpose-Led Publishing (PLP), a new coalition committed to prioritizing purpose over profit. For more information, please visit https://www.purposeledpublishing.org/.
