IOP Publishing launches GetFTR browser extension to simplify full-text access for authors and readers -

IOP Publishing (IOPP) has introduced a new browser extension called Get Full Text Research (GetFTR), aimed at facilitating easier access to and sharing of research outputs by authors and readers across the web. This free extension enables authors publishing with IOPP to enhance the visibility and discoverability of their work, while providing readers with a more direct route to trusted research content.

The GetFTR browser extension streamlines the path from discovery to full-text access on any website that uses Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs), including search engines, social media, news outlets, reference databases, and library discovery platforms. When the full text of a research article is available through an institutional subscription or Open Access, the extension displays a GetFTR button featuring a full-text indicator. Additional information is revealed on hover, clarifying the user’s entitlement to access. A smart link then directs users straight to the authoritative version of record, facilitating fast and reliable retrieval of high-quality research. The extension also displays any retraction or errata notices at the point of discovery, supporting transparency and research integrity.

Beyond publisher platforms, the extension functions on major preprint servers such as Preprints.org, OSF.io, arXiv, ChemRxiv, bioRxiv, and SSRN, allowing entitled researchers to access the most current versions of preprints.

The GetFTR browser extension is currently free to install and is available for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge browsers, with support for Safari expected in the near future.

Dianne Benham, Product Director at GetFTR, stated that the extension was developed for publishers participating in the GetFTR initiative to ensure researchers can access the latest versions of their content seamlessly from any location on the web.

Kim Eggleton, Head of Peer Review and Research Integrity at IOP Publishing, emphasized that integrating the GetFTR browser extension reinforces IOP Publishing’s commitment to research integrity by enabling researchers to access the definitive version of research articles directly from wherever they find the content. This functionality ensures that users are reading the most reliable, citable, and up-to-date version of research as intended for dissemination.
