IOPP and UMass Amherst libraries sign fee-free open access agreement -

The University of Massachusetts Amherst Libraries have entered into an agreement with the Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP) to provide open access publishing without author fees and expanded reading access for the university community.

Under the 2025–2027 agreement, UMass Amherst corresponding authors can publish open access in all IOPP journals at no cost, while readers gain full access to IOPP’s portfolio of about 100 multidisciplinary titles. Between 2020 and 2024, UMass Amherst authors published 126 articles with IOPP, 26 of which had campus-based corresponding authors.

The new arrangement is expected to further support open access publishing across disciplines, enhancing global reach and compliance with funding requirements. Authors retain copyright under the agreement, and open access articles typically achieve 70% more downloads and 15% higher citations compared with non-open access papers.

The partnership adds to a growing list of agreements that allow UMass Amherst authors to publish open access at low or no cost. More information about publishing under the IOPP agreement and other similar arrangements is available from the UMass Amherst Libraries’ Scholarly Communication team.
