iPad, tablets to erode Wintel laptops market, says Barclays Capital report -

The research arm of investment bank Barclays Capital, US, has released a report, according to which tablet sales are forecast to reach 15 million units in 2010, soaring to 28 million in 2011. This is likely to hurt sales of notebooks and computers that come with Windows OS and Intel processors (Wintel), says the report. According to Barclays analyst Ben Reitzes, the initial phase of the tablet surge will cannibalise a portion of the notebook category, particularly a chunk of the netbook market and low-end notebook market.

Currently, almost all of the tablet growth is reportedly coming from Apple's iPad. It is predicted that Apple may sell as many as 10 million units in 2010 and more than twice as many in 2011. Other vendors will also contribute to sales, says the report.

Owing to the expected surge in tablet sales, more consumer-based personal computing will move to devices using Google operating systems such as Android and ARM processors in 2011, the report notes. This will be in addition to the popular iPad that runs Apple's OS.
