Online publishing services provider Semantico Ltd., UK, and IREX Technologies have launched an end to end solution tailored for academic publishers. Students will now be able to manipulate and annotate their texts digitally using the DR1000 Digital Reader.
Following the limited success of other digital readers during trials for academic use at Princeton University, the partnership between IREX and Semantico addresses both the software and hardware sides of the equation and offers a professional, writable digital reading device coupled with a robust and innovative online publishing solution. The iRex DR1000 is already in use in schools and universities across Europe including two Dutch universities and other educational institutes. As a leading software developer for online publishing, Semantico recognised the requirement to develop their rich user experience and flexible operating system which is already used by leading publishers such as WileyBlackwell and Oxford University Press, for this new channel.
E-readers have seen an explosion of interest in recent months, with leading publishing experts suggesting that the industry has finally hit its 'iPod moment'. In May 2009, the British Library gave readers a chance to familiarise themselves with these new devices and to freely explore the possible recreational and research benefits of the e-book revolution in an effort to ensure that readers are equipped with the digital literacy skills to be able to use such technology. Devices on display included Sony Reader, iRex DR1000 and the iLiad.
