Barbara Casadei, professor of cardiovascular medicine at Imperial College London and head of the National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI), has been named the next Editor-in-Chief of JAMA Cardiology. She will assume the role in early 2026, succeeding Robert Bonow, the founding Editor-in-Chief.
Dr. Casadei brings extensive experience in cardiovascular research, leading a bench to bedside' research program focused on conditions such as heart failure and atrial fibrillation. She founded and co-chaired EuroHeart, a European Society of Cardiology initiative to assess and improve cardiovascular care in Europe. She is the principal investigator of a UK Biobank cardiac monitoring study involving over 35,000 participants. The project examines the impact of silent arrhythmias on AI-derived imaging, cognitive decline, and stroke risk.
She also serves on the boards of the Leducq Foundation, Novo Nordisk Foundation, Max Delbrück Centre for Molecular Medicine, and CADENCE in Singapore. Her honors include the British Cardiovascular Society’s Mackenzie Medal and the European Society of Cardiology’s Gold Medal, where she served as president from 2018 to 2020. Dr. Casadei earned her medical degree from the University of Pavia and a doctorate from the University of Oxford, where she is a visiting professor.
Launched in 2016, JAMA Cardiology publishes research across cardiovascular medicine and surgery. The journal, part of the JAMA Network, records more than six million annual article views and downloads and has an impact factor of 14.1.
