JMIR Publications and Jisc have renewed their flat-fee unlimited open access publishing agreement for 2026–2027, extending a model that removes individual Article Processing Charges (APCs) for researchers at participating UK institutions.
Since its launch in 2022, the agreement has eliminated individual APCs for researchers across dozens of UK research institutions. In 2025, more than half of all UK research published in JMIR journals was made available without APCs under the agreement. Participating Jisc member institutions have collectively published more than 700 articles through the model.
The agreement replaces individual APCs with a single flat fee, simplifying publication workflows and increasing equity for researchers at all career stages.
Under the renewed agreement, eligible corresponding authors affiliated with participating UK institutions will continue to receive unlimited APC-free publishing across JMIR’s portfolio of more than 30 gold open access journals, including the Journal of Medical Internet Research. The agreement covers articles accepted between April 1, 2026, and March 31, 2027.
The partnership supports efforts to remove barriers to open publishing for UK researchers while enabling fair and sustainable access to open access opportunities across participating institutions. The model has also contributed to the development of alternative funding approaches for open access publishing.
