JMIR Publications and the University of California (UC) have announced a multi‑year extension of their institutional membership agreement, managed through the California Digital Library (CDL). The renewal extends the partnership through December 31, 2026, reinforcing a shared commitment to advancing open science.
The agreement continues the multi‑payer model that has supported the open access publication of more than 450 articles since 2021. Under this arrangement, UC Libraries automatically cover the first $1,000 of the Article Processing Fee (APF) for accepted articles authored by UC‑affiliated researchers. Authors without available research funds may request full coverage of the remaining APF from UC Libraries.
Miranda Bennett, Director of Shared Collections at CDL, stated that the University of California remains committed to making open access publishing sustainable and equitable. She explained that extending the multi‑payer agreement lowers barriers for UC authors publishing with JMIR Publications and ensures that financial constraints do not prevent researchers from sharing their work openly.
Dennis O’Brien, Vice President of Communications and Partnerships at JMIR Publications, noted that the extension reflects the organization’s ongoing collaboration with UC. He described the agreement as a practical example of how libraries and independent open access publishers can work together to establish sustainable models that benefit the academic community.
The extended partnership highlights the role of cooperative funding models in supporting equitable access to scholarly publishing and ensuring that researchers can disseminate their work without financial obstacles.
