JMIR Publications, a leading open access publisher in digital health and open science, has appointed Sean Jeong as its new CEO, effective January 23, 2025. Jeong takes over from Dr. Gunther Eysenbach, the founder of the company, who has served as CEO for over 20 years, overseeing its growth from a small startup to a globally recognized leader in the open access publishing space.
Dr. Eysenbach will step down from his role as CEO to pursue new opportunities focused on the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and academic publishing, as well as furthering the advancement of Plan P, a vision for a more open and equitable academic publishing ecosystem. Despite his departure from the CEO position, Dr. Eysenbach will continue to serve as the editor-in-chief of Journal of Medical Internet Research and CEO of Digital Health and Science Ventures, the parent company of JMIR Publications.
Dr. Eysenbach's leadership has been instrumental in transforming JMIR Publications into one of the first open access publishers in the digital health field, with a portfolio of over 30 journals. Under his guidance, JMIR Publications built a strong reputation for innovation and quality in the field of open science. As a pioneer in digital health publishing, Dr. Eysenbach has been recognized as one of the most influential figures in the global medical informatics community and is a co-founder of the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA).
Sean Jeong, who has spent four years as JMIR’s chief product and technology officer, will bring his deep expertise in consulting, technology, and strategy to his new role as CEO. With a background spanning more than two decades in agile delivery, digital transformation, and program execution, Jeong has a proven record of driving innovation. He played a key role in scaling JMIR’s technology infrastructure and overseeing its financial operations during his time as chief product officer.
The leadership transition marks a new chapter for JMIR Publications as it continues to lead in digital health and open science publishing. With a deep commitment to advancing accessible, high-quality research, the company remains focused on shaping the future of academic publishing.
