JMIR Publications has introduced the new Karma Reviewer Rewards Program, describing it as a merit-based system designed to recognize high-quality peer review. The announcement states that peer reviewers provide critical expertise required to support the integrity of scientific discovery. The Karma Reviewer Rewards Program is intended to honor that contribution.
JMIR Publications states that the new Karma program focuses exclusively on the rigor of peer review. The program operates as follows:
• Earn Points: Reviewers earn Karma points for reviews that meet JMIR Publications quality standards.
• Automatic Conversion: Karma points convert directly into redeemable Karma credits.
• Redeem: Karma credits remain valid for 24 months and may be applied toward future Article Processing Fees (APFs) or other JMIR services.
JMIR Publications states that Karma points are awarded once an editorial decision is reached. The program is designed to reward the quality of reviewer feedback regardless of whether a paper is accepted or rejected. JMIR Publications lists the following reasons for participation:
• Support Your Research: Earned Karma provides a pathway to offset future publishing costs with JMIR Publications.
• Merit-Based Rewards: Rewards are tied to the depth and professionalism of reviewer feedback.
• Foster Scholarly Excellence: Reviewer edits and insights can improve the clarity and impact of new research.
Historical Karma Credits from the previous program will remain redeemable within their original expiration window, and beginning February 4, 2026, reviewers will be able to track Karma balances and review ratings through the JMIR Publications user dashboard.
