AIP Publishing has announced that Journal of Applied Physics and Physics of Plasmas will become open access in 2025 as part of the organization’s Subscribe to Open (S2O) pilot program. This transition is made possible by institutional subscribers renewing their subscriptions and supporting the S2O model, which aims to provide broader access to scientific research without imposing additional costs on authors.
The S2O pilot program, introduced in 2023, enables open access publication for these journals when sufficient institutional support is secured through subscription renewals. The model is designed to expand the reach of scientific research, ensuring that new volumes of Journal of Applied Physics and Physics of Plasmas are freely accessible to the global research community. The initiative reflects AIP Publishing’s commitment to open science, accessibility, and equitable knowledge dissemination.
AIP Publishing has reported that engagement with these journals increased significantly following their participation in the pilot program, with a 50% rise in article readership in 2024. The success of this approach highlights the growing demand for open-access publishing and its impact on expanding the visibility of research within these scientific disciplines.
The S2O model provides a structured approach for research institutions, funding bodies, and publishers to navigate the transition toward sustainable open access. Under this framework, existing subscribers maintain access to their journals through standard subscription processes. If a sufficient number of institutions renew their subscriptions, the entire volume for that year is converted to open access, making all published articles freely available in perpetuity. This method ensures that open access is achieved without service disruptions or additional financial burdens on authors.
AIP Publishing continues to explore sustainable open-access solutions, with the S2O pilot serving as one component of a broader strategy to increase the availability of scholarly research. In 2024, nearly one-fifth of all articles published by AIP Publishing were openly accessible, reflecting ongoing efforts to support global knowledge-sharing initiatives.
