The Journal of Neuromuscular Diseases (JND), published by IOS Press, is transitioning to a Gold Open Access publication starting from July 1, 2023, with the release of Volume 10, Issue 4. This move will make all articles published in the journal available online for free, making them readily accessible for readers to view, download, share, and reuse. The move to open access publishing will also enable authors to comply more easily with funder and institutional mandates.
JND, which is now in its tenth year, is well-regarded as one of the leading publications focused on Neuromuscular Disease (NMD) research globally. The journal's Editors-in-Chief, Carsten G. Bönnemann, MD, and Hanns Lochmüller, MD, PhD, expressed their excitement and stated that the goal of the journal is to disseminate scientific and clinical knowledge to advance NMD research and benefit patients' quality of life and outcomes.
In recent years, the number of open access papers published in JND has been increasing steadily, with approximately 50% of the articles now publicly available. The transition to a fully open access publication model will increase the journal's impact and benefit the entire NMD community, including authors, readers, libraries, hospitals, funding agencies, patients, and their families.
JND offers a rigorous peer-review process and operates with rapid manuscript processing times. From May 1, 2023, accepted papers will be published Open Access under a Creative Commons license, with authors retaining copyright to their published work. It is important to note that the transition to Open Access will not interfere with the editorial process, and the editorial office retains its independent right to accept and decline submitted papers based on their merit and quality.
The Open Access fee of $1,500 per accepted article has been set competitively compared to other journals in the field. This fee will not apply to certain publication types, such as invited articles, editorials, and letters. Authors from low-income countries, as defined by Research4Life, may apply to have fees waived under certain circumstances.
IOS Press Publisher, Rasjel van der Holst, said that the transition of JND to Gold Open Access is part of an exciting time for IOS Press. The publishing company is supportive of exploring new options facilitated by an evolving open access publishing landscape and meeting the growing expectations related to open access. JND will be added to the expanding portfolio of open content journals and books published by IOS Press.
The transition to Gold Open Access is a positive move for the Journal of Neuromuscular Diseases, and it is expected to increase the journal's reach and impact, benefiting the NMD community and making research more accessible.
