Karger and Jisc announce ‘Read, Publish, and Outreach’ partnership to enhance access and engagement in research -

Switzerland-based Karger Publishers and the UK-based Jisc have initiated a pioneering three-year transitional agreement aimed at expanding Open Access (OA) research publishing. This collaboration extends beyond conventional academic publication, offering authors and institutions the opportunity to present their research in engaging written, audio, and visual formats, with the intent to reach a wider, non-scientific audience.

Effective from 2024 to 2026, the Transitional Agreement ensures that authors from participating Jisc member institutions can publish their articles in OA at no cost while enjoying unlimited access to Karger journals. In a first for the industry, Karger Publishers have introduced an innovative feature allowing authors to complement their academic publications with engaging and easily understandable written, audio, and visual formats, targeting both scientific and non-scientific audiences.

The agreement incorporates optional services for science communication and dissemination, facilitated by Karger’s academic outreach team. This aligns with Karger’s commitment to fostering accessibility and comprehensibility by presenting simplified plain language and compelling formats that cater to non-scientific audiences, including government officials, policymakers, industry partners, and the general public. The ultimate goal is to enhance public trust in science by making scientific findings more approachable and understandable to diverse demographics.

Under this transformative agreement, authors gain the option to produce shareable content such as short animations (in 2D and 3D visual formats), podcasts, and magazine-style articles with consistent institutional branding. Karger Publishers will promote these formats through social media outreach, ensuring global distribution and providing an impact report detailing the extensive reach of this disseminated content.

The collaboration between Karger and Jisc redefines the boundaries of research accessibility and comprehension, setting a new precedent in how scientific research can be disseminated and engaged with diverse audiences, transcending traditional academic confines.
