Medical and scientific publisher S. Karger, Switzerland, has announced that it has received one 'Highly Commended' and two 'Commended' awards for publications in Respiratory Medicine, Basic and Clinical Sciences as well as Basis of Medicine 2008 BMA Medical Book Competition awards ceremony.
Diffuse Parenchymal Lung Disease, a comprehensive guide to diagnosis and management of all aspects of this multi-faceted condition, received a 'Highly Commended' in the Respiratory Medicine category, where a Karger publication has also been singled out previously. Drug Hypersensitivity was awarded 'Commended' in the Basic and Clinical Sciences section, the fifth Karger publication in recent years to win an award in this category. 'Commended' status was also given to the fourth edition of the long-standing bestseller Using and Understanding Medical Statistics, a classic in the Basis of Medicine field.
The BMA Medical Book competition is conducted annually by the BMA's Board of Science and administered by the BMA Library. It aims to encourage and reward excellence in medical publishing and patient information. All entries are reviewed by physicians and educators who are asked to consider accuracy, currency, originality, book production quality, and whether the title meets the needs of its audience. In 2008, the competition received 640 book submissions in 26 categories. 63 titles were Highly Commended and 23 first place prizes were awarded in total.
