The BMA Medical Book Awards, which celebrate outstanding contributions to medical literature, has awarded or shortlisted Karger Publishers every year for the last 20 years. This year, the BMA has assigned Fast Facts: Lymphoma, 3rd edition from a total of 600 entries in the oncology category as a "Highly Commended" title.
Authored by Dr Chris Hatton, Oxford, UK, Dr Graham Collins, Oxford, UK, and Prof. John Sweetenham, Salt Lake City, USA, this highly accessible publication distils the most important aspects of lymphoma diagnosis and management into a clearly illustrated practical overview of each lymphoma subtype. According to the BMA reviewers: “It is an excellently produced book, pitched at an excellent level in that it is easily accessible for those with less knowledge of the topic but also detailed enough to build on knowledge or for those who already have background knowledge. The structure and layout of the book is clear.”
Fast Facts: Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency for Patients and Supporters was “Highly Commended” at the BMA’s Patient Information Awards, which recognise excellence in the production and dissemination of accessible, well-designed and clinically balanced patient information. At the Award ceremony, it was recognised for the Decision Making prize, which awards resources that facilitate the patient decision-making process.
The author of the publication Dr Rachael Grace, Boston, USA, obtained support from Karger and worked with patients with pyruvate kinase deficiency to produce a Connecting and Advancing Health Sciences booklet that provides easy-to-read information on this rare genetic disease. It is especially designed to enhance the conversation between patients and healthcare professionals.
“Being recognised with “Highly Commended” for two Fast Facts publications shows the importance of a concise knowledge transfer from research results for patients and clinicians. We as a publishing house have also decided to enhance this area with our new strategy”, comments Gabriella Karger, Publisher and Chairwoman of the Board at Karger Publishers. Fast Facts are premium, concise, informative handbooks for medical professionals, patients and their supporters designed to close the knowledge gaps in healthcare.
The BMA is the trade union and professional body for doctors in the UK. Its annual BMA Medical Book and Patient Information Awards honor book publications of exceptional content, production quality and originality, and encourage and reward excellence in medical publishing.
