Online books retailer Amazon.com, Inc., US, is reportedly on track to sell over 8 million Kindles in 2010. This is about 60 percent higher than what analysts had predicted. Analysts had earlier forecast that about 5 million Kindles would sell this year.
According to Bloomberg BusinessWeek's sources, Amazon sold 2.4 million Kindles in 2009. The device's sales have therefore more than tripled in a year.
The year 2010 saw tough competition in the e-reader market. It was a year for consumers as Apple, Barnes & Noble and Border put pressure on Amazon to create a more enhanced and affordable product. Earlier this year Amazon launched its new Kindle, which is smaller and faster. The devise is priced at $139. The affordable price is seen to be a major factor in the rapid rise of Kindle sales.
