The American Medical Association (AMA) has announced that Dr. Kirsten Bibbins‑Domingo, will continue as Editor in Chief of JAMA and the JAMA Network through 2031. The extension provides continuity in the leadership of one of the world’s most widely recognized medical publishing platforms.
Dr. Bibbins‑Domingo joined the JAMA Network in 2022 from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where she is Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and the Lee Goldman, MD Professor of Medicine. She is also an attending general internist at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, where she continues to see patients.
AMA leadership described her as a strong steward of JAMA’s legacy, noting that under her guidance the journal has expanded its global influence and maintained its role as a trusted resource for physicians, researchers, and health leaders.
Founded in 1883, JAMA is among the most widely circulated peer‑reviewed medical journals, with a Journal Impact Factor of 65.4, ranking third among medical and scientific journals publishing original research. The JAMA Network includes JAMA Network Open and 11 specialty journals, each recognized as a leading publication in its field.
Since assuming leadership, Dr. Bibbins‑Domingo has overseen initiatives to expand engagement and strengthen scientific communication. These include the establishment of the JAMA Summit, which convenes global leaders to address critical issues in medicine and health care, with past summits focusing on obesity, firearm violence, artificial intelligence, and clinical trials. She also introduced JAMA+, a curated content platform enhanced with multimedia features, and expanded the network’s international reach through author engagement, global editorial appointments, and digital platforms.
Additional efforts have focused on supporting early‑career researchers and reviewers through expanded fellowship opportunities across JAMA and its specialty journals.
