The University of Kansas (KU) Libraries’ Shulenburger Office of Scholarly Communication & Copyright has officially opened the nomination process for the 2024 David Shulenburger Award for Innovation & Advocacy in Scholarly Communication. Nominations will be accepted through September 20, 2024.
Established in 2014 by former KU provost and executive vice chancellor David Shulenburger, the award recognizes outstanding contributions by KU faculty, staff, students, and academic departments in the areas of open access and scholarly communication innovation. Each year, the Shulenburger Award honors individuals or departments that have demonstrated exceptional efforts to advance the open sharing of scholarly work and advocate for transformative changes within the scholarly communication system.
In the previous year, two distinguished scholars were honored with the award. Bruce Lieberman, a professor in KU’s Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology and senior curator at the Biodiversity Institute & Natural History Museum, was recognized for his efforts to convert a prestigious subscription-based journal into an open-access resource. Cameron Piercy, associate professor in the Department of Communication Studies and founding director of the Human-Machine Communication Lab, was celebrated for his commitment to advancing open access and mentoring students in the creation and use of openly available materials.
For the 2024 cycle, up to two awardees will be selected from the pool of nominations, with the award amounts ranging between $500 and $2,500. Recipients may also be invited to join KU's Open Access Advisory Board, a role previously undertaken by past honorees Lieberman and Piercy. Since its inception, the Shulenburger Award has recognized 13 individuals and departments for their contributions to scholarly communication.
Nominations, including self-nominations, will be accepted until September 20, and the selected awardees will be announced during International Open Access Week, which runs from October 21-27, 2024. For more information or to submit a nomination, interested parties can visit the KU Libraries website or contact Josh Bolick, head of the Shulenburger Office of Scholarly Communication & Copyright, via email.
