Healthcare publisher Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW), part of Wolters Kluwer Health, US, has announced the release of the 34th edition of the Washington Manual® of Medical Therapeutics, the first edition of the venerable text with full digital interactivity. Written by residents and fellows and reviewed by faculty at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, the Washington Manual is considered the premiere portable reference for generations of physicians.
First published more than 65 years ago, the Washington Manual of Medical Therapeutics has been completely revamped and repackaged as an interactive digital experience powered by Inkling. Viewable through a browser or as a download to a tablet or smartphone, the new digital version includes the complete text with customized navigation and a rapid, index-based search capability.
‘The Manual’ has been thoroughly updated to deliver an evidence-based presentation of current therapies in an engaging, but practical format, in both print and digital, and making it the preferred on-call reference for house staff, medical students, faculty and other healthcare professionals throughout the world.
The enhanced functionality gives a new generation of physicians an ability to quickly navigate and personalise the classic text. Users can link to relevant content directly from the text, to a newly created glossary, and to citations on PubMed and other related Internet articles. Users also can share notes with colleagues, highlight text for easier reference, insert electronic bookmarks and cut-and-paste.
New features include a streamlined formula that helps readers keep pace with the latest advances in the field. An enhanced table of contents allows for quick reference and a new chapter on toxicology prepares the user to respond effectively to any poisoning, overdose or exposure emergency. Decision support algorithms simplify clinical support to a functional concept.
Purchase of the print edition entitles the clinician to access the digital edition on the Inkling platform at no additional charge, allowing access to all of the interactive multimedia content using iPad® tablets and iPhones. Subscribers also can access the content online through a PC or Mac browser. Individuals interested in purchasing the digital edition alone may do so through Inkling. In addition, a digital edition for Amazon Kindle and Barnes & Noble Nook is also available and can be purchased through those retailers.
