Malaysia’s first national transformative agreement enhances access to open research -

Springer Nature and the Higher Education Electronic Resources Consortium (KONSEPt) have announced the first national Transformative Agreement (TA) in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, advancing open access (OA) publishing across all of Malaysia’s higher education institutions. This development reflects a growing global shift toward open science and research, supporting the wider dissemination and visibility of scientific knowledge.

The agreement enables researchers from all 20 public universities in Malaysia to publish OA in more than 2,000 hybrid journals within the Springer Nature portfolio. Additionally, students and faculty now have full reading access to over 2,300 journal titles. Data from Springer Nature indicate that TAs have an immediate and measurable impact on OA output, enhancing the international reach and influence of research originating from Malaysian institutions and fostering opportunities for collaboration.

Malaysia has already made significant progress in OA adoption, with 57% of its research output published OA by 2022. This agreement strengthens that trajectory by providing a scalable model for OA publishing that aligns with national objectives in digitalisation, internationalisation, and knowledge infrastructure development.

This agreement represents Springer Nature’s seventh TA within Asia, joining initiatives in Hong Kong, India, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, and Taiwan. Since implementing its first TA in 2014, Springer Nature has established over 80 agreements worldwide, supporting researchers from more than 3,700 institutions.
