Maryellen Giger, A.N. Pritzker Professor of Radiology, University of Chicago, elected to SPIE presidential chain -

SPIE Fellow Maryellen Giger, A.N. Pritzker Professor of Radiology, Committee on Medical Physics, and the College Vice-Chair of Radiology at the University of Chicago, has been elected to serve as the 2016 Vice President of SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics. With her election, Giger joins the SPIE presidential chain and will serve as President-Elect in 2017 and as the society's President in 2018.

SPIE 2015 President Toyohiko Yatagai made the announcement along with other SPIE election results at the Annual General Meeting of the Society on August 11 in San Diego. Terms begin January 1, 2016.

Giger is Editor-in-Chief of the SPIE Journal of Medical Imaging, and is the founding chair of the program committee for the Computer-Aided Diagnosis Conference at the SPIE Medical Imaging symposium. She served on the SPIE Board of Directors from 2012 to 2014.

Robert Lieberman, President of Lumoptix LLC, will serve as the 2016 President of the Society.

Glenn Boreman, professor, Chairman at the Department of Physics and Optical Science, and Director of the Center for Optoelectronics and Optical Communications at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and co-founder and Chairman of the Board of Plasmonics, Inc., will serve as President-Elect.

Gary Spiegel, retired as Senior Vice President at Newport Corp., was elected by SPIE members to serve as the 2015 Secretary/Treasurer.

The newly elected Society Directors, who will serve three-year terms for 2016-2018, are: David L. Andrews, University of East Anglia; Jennifer Barton, University of Arizona; James Fujimoto, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and Joseph Howard, NASA.

The SPIE nominating committee accepts recommendations for the election slate on an ongoing basis. Directors, who serve a three-year term, are expected to attend and participate in three board meetings each year.
