Four leading mathematical societies have collaborated to develop a shared set of author guidelines aimed at improving the accessibility of mathematics content published online, in response to regulatory requirements under the European Accessibility Act (EAA) and updates to Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
The American Mathematical Society (AMS), European Mathematical Society (EMS), London Mathematical Society (LMS), and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) jointly drafted the ‘Author Guidelines for Preparing Accessible Mathematics Content’ to support mathematics authors, many of whom rely on the LaTeX document preparation system. The guidelines are intended to help authors address accessibility requirements early in the manuscript preparation process and reduce the need for extensive revisions later in production.
Each participating publisher will link to the guidelines from the respective websites, with the document hosted on SIAM’s website. While the societies will adapt the guidelines to fit individual publication workflows, the collaboration establishes a consistent baseline standard to guide authors regardless of where the work is submitted.
The initiative was developed through a cross-functional working group convened in 2025, bringing together staff from editorial, production, marketing, and sales teams across the four societies, with support from publishing and society leadership. Input was also gathered from colleagues, volunteers, and mathematicians with visual impairments through regular working group discussions.
The guidelines were discussed publicly in November at the Charleston Conference, an annual meeting for librarians, publishers, and resource managers. The document has been positioned as a resource not only for authors but also for the broader research and scholarly community, where mathematical notation and figures are frequently cited as barriers to accessible publishing.
Further discussion of the joint guidelines is scheduled for the 2026 Joint Mathematics Meetings in Washington, DC, where representatives from SIAM and AMS will present on the development and implementation of the recommendations.
